Borromeo String Quartet Concert in Honor of Bruce Whiteman

Published: May 2, 2025

On April 27, 2025, the Borromeo String Quartet delivered a compelling all-Beethoven program, commemorating the 30th anniversary season of the Chamber Music at the Clark series. This special concert honored Bruce Whiteman, who served as Head Librarian of the Clark from 1996 to 2010 and contributed insightful program notes to the series for over 25 years .

We published a commemorative volume featuring a curated selection of Bruce’s program notes to mark the occasion, and everyone in attendance received a copy. His insightful program notes can be read in a digital copy of the commemorative volume.

The Borromeo String Quartet, renowned for their dynamic interpretations and commitment to both classical and contemporary repertoire, has been praised by the Boston Globe as “simply the best.” Their performance in the Clark Library’s intimate, wood-paneled drawing room—originally designed for chamber music—provided an acoustically rich setting that enhanced the depth of Beethoven’s compositions. The event culminated with a reception, where all gathered to share stories and have Bruce sign their commemorative volume. It was a joy to see all of the love and respect concert attendees shared with Bruce.

This concert was part of a celebratory season that also included a November 2024 tribute to Peter Hanns Reill, the series’ founder and former Clark Director. Together, these events highlighted the legacy of individuals who have shaped the Clark Library’s cultural contributions over the decades.
